Support for Street Children in Kinshasa/DR Congo- Centre d’Accueil Esperance
The Democratic Republic of Congo has since the early 1990s seen an increase in the number of children requiring special protection measures among which street children. According to a 2006’s report by Human Rights Watch, there were around 30,000 street children in Kinshasa alone in 2005. In 2020-2021, UNICEF estimated that there were between 60,000 to 70,000 in Kinshasa.
In February 2025, we started a new project to support some of these children in the Nsele area, in the Eastern part of Kinshasa. Our project combines street-outreach activities together with a non -residential drop-in/reception centre to start with, with the aim of moving longer term towards a residential stage, skills development and social reinsertion.
